Supporting children’s development of executive function (EF) skills may begin the moment a preschool or kindergarten teacher receives their class list. Mid-summer they may craft a letter for students and caregivers to share introductory information about their new teacher(s); provide expectations for the first day(s) of school; and request caregivers complete a questionnaire to provide information about their child. However, in addition to providing students and families with this beneficial information, this letter may also support children’s development of EF skills. Within this letter the teacher may ask students to share a goal they hope to achieve in the year ahead and include a task for them to complete in preparation for the new school year. This might include finding an artifact related to their interests to share during the first week of school. Requesting the completion of these tasks, with the support of their families, is a proactive approach to assisting children with goal setting, planning, and organization.
