Teachers can model acceptance and inclusion in discussing social justice issues with young children. A willingness to be with difficult topics and listen to children’s concerns provides the opportunity for growth. While different themes may bring discomfort, teachers create a safe space and allow the conversation to unfold, guiding the process and reflecting along the way. A commitment to equity and authenticity means welcoming conversations among families, co-teachers and children alike so that all members of the community feel seen, accepted, celebrated, and able to thrive.
